Two Many Banjos Feature

by Doug MacRostie

I can’t say enough about Two Many Banjos; the music, the lyrics, the feel – they are a true treasure out of Duluth, MN. Forming new sonic territory by mixing Americana, bluegrass and world music; TMB isn’t afraid to try something new and different.

My wife and I attended their concert at Terrapin Station in Nevis, MN on a cold evening back in February. With the lights down low and the audience listening closely, TMB put on a fantastic show ranging from high energy bluegrass foot-stompers to walls of drifting world rhythms.

That night I recorded an interview about their latest release Fatwa.

This Thursday, April 21st, my feature An Evening with Two Many Banjos, which includes live music and conversation, will be on Culturology from Northern Community Radio at 8am; 91.7 KAXE Grand Rapids, 89.9 Brainerd, 105.3 Bemidji, streaming at, and available here shortly after that.

TMB is led by the sincere vocals of Marc Gartman on banjo and bouzouki, with Bryan “Lefty” Johnson on percussion, Matt Molbey on standup bass, and Dave Caroll (of Trampled by Turtles) on banjo.

As a songwriter with multiple projects Marc tends to release 2-3 albums a year. Like I previously reported,  he recently decided to retire the “Marc Gartband” monicker which was for any work he did that wasn’t on a banjo and now includes that music in TMB’s catalog, bringing the bouzouki with him.

There is a raw honesty to Marc Gartman and his writing – and when combined with the fine musicians of TMB they create outstanding music that teases your mind, challenges your mood and moves your soul. Don’t miss An Evening with Two Many Banjos this Thursday morning!
