I’ve Got Plans After the End of the World

by Doug MacRostie

I’m still giddy about the end of the world this May 21st! Haven’t you heard? Judgement day is upon us and the righteous will float to heaven while everyone else rides Earth straight to hell (no really, I read it in this story from NPR).  The perfect pre-week to enjoying The Color Pharmacy:

The Color Pharmacy are one of the most exciting bands out of Minnesota, and it’s a crime that I haven’t seen them in concert yet. But that will change come Thursday, May 26th, when Color Pharmacy will be at Terrapin Station in Nevis, MN.

They create experimental indie-rock music with a unique, unpredictable, and edgy style – often using projectors and lights for a full on experience. Over the past several years, The Color Pharmacy has toured all over the U.S., including three SXSW festivals. They did an alternate soundtrack to a segment of the original version of Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory in 2006, and more recently a soundtrack to the French film “The Red Balloon”. Following their EP “DeTour” the Color Pharmacy is back with the full-length record “Texatonka” which is currently available online.

But for my interview with them we’ll talk about music that may never be released, and not just because the rapture; they have shelved a full-length multimedia project!

Jake Dilley told me that the audio for the project was basically done, but they ran into issues while working on the 3D video side of things. Knowing there is a full albums worth of material from such a great band sitting on a shelf somewhere blows my mind. “We’ve talked about releasing some of the songs at some point, or re-recording a few standouts for the next record”. Catch a glimpse of this hidden material in my future feature :)

As an added bonus for the concert that night Terrapin Station is going to try Aromatic Omnivision:  a harmonic synergy of sound, light and aroma capable of leading the mind through archetypal states of consciousness by tuning brain-wave frequencies. Brian Skinness told me, “It’s something we’ve been moving toward at Terrapin that I conceptualized years ago. It’s why I started with the essential oils in 1993.” Sounds fun ;)

The Color Pharmacy, Terrapin Station in Nevis, Aromatic Omnivision, Thursday May 26th, be there! Unless of course you were saved and went to heaven… then screw you :D
